NZIA Wellington Architecture Award 2010 and NZIA Resene Colour Award 2010
Awards citation: “It could be described as two boxes with a gap in the middle, but this would be oversimplifying a subtle, impeccably detailed beach house. It has the innate comfort and scale of a well loved bach but surprises the viewer with hidden passages leading to clever spaces, and even cleverer details. This is relaxing haven that makes the most of a marvellous Kapiti Coast perch.”
This holiday home delivers a strong and clear architectural character with economy, where we have used simple modular construction techniques combined with a simple form. The plan is a rectangle and is divided into 3 parts, the solid bedroom forms at each end support a floating roof over the living space in between.
This layout allows the living room to face both east to hills and west to the sea. It allows sun into the house throughout the day, for passive solar heating of the concrete slab and creates a sheltered outside space on the east side that still keeps a strong connection to the western sea views.
