<image:caption>This holiday house sits on a west facing hillside in a bush clad bay in the Marlborough Sounds. We intended to create a delicate platform amongst trees for life to unfold. The house is in two parts, each with a fine roof that follows the lie of the land. The upstairs living areas are one large space with decks at each end to enjoy both the morning and afternoon sun. Downstairs bedrooms float amongst the trees with windows opening across the tree tops. Awards: NZIA Local Award for Architecture 2010 HOME magazine article</image:caption>

<image:caption>Loretta, located directly beneath our studio, is the 'little sister' of Floriditas Cafe a few doors down Cuba Street. The space has had several guises since it was built around 1910, including as an arcade to a picture theatre and most recently as a commercial bakery with a small cafe fronting Cuba St. The space was stripped out to reveal elements of the original building and to make a connection through to Swan Lane at the rear. New elements have been inserted that contrast the existing textures and materials and complement the natural, earthy food and the Paul Melser earthenware. A variety of spatial qualities are achieved through dividing the long narrow space into different zones, with views filtered through steel screens creating a sense of intimacy in a space that can seat up to 120. <image:title>Home - Tutere Beach House 2011</image:title>
<image:caption>The house is in Waikanae, a small verdant sea side town on the Kapiti Coast 45 minutes north of New Zealand’s capital city Wellington. It is in the old beach area of Waikanae where many of the houses are holiday homes or ‘baches’ built from the early 1900’s onwards. This house is a holiday retreat for a Wellington couple and their 3 children. The site is a narrow strip, which sits behind a high fore-dune towards the beach. The house is designed as a ‘dune hopper’ with the single open-plan living space sitting on top of the bedrooms and peering out to the sea and Kapiti Island beyond. The house references the fibrolite sheet construction used in many of the 1950’s houses nearby with colours drawn from the seaside location. <image:caption>The house sits on a steep site above Seatoun Heights Road, perched above the harbour. The owners were attracted to the property because of the spectacular views and the existing established vegetation. The bedroom level is excavated back into the hillside forming a base to the upper more, open and light, living level. The bedroom level undulates in and out, allowing light in and views out, giving each bedroom a different character and aspect. Clad in dark vertical corrugated iron it anchors the form into the site and is intended to develop a relationship with the established trees. The lighter form of the living level above flows across the bedroom level wrapping around an existing small flat lawn and garden to the northwest of the house. The floor level steps down towards the lawn and allows views back through the house and out to the harbour beyond. <image:title>Home - Francis Bell House 2011</image:title>
<image:caption>The site is located in Eastbourne, a seaside suburb situated across Wellington Harbour from Wellington City. Layers of hills surround the harbour on two sides creating a varied and interesting topography. The property is steep and borders a large area of native bush reserve and is only accessible by steps and cable car. It sits high above the other houses in the area and is surrounded by bush and birdsong. The house is composed of two extruded forms. The upper level is kinked to follow the contours of the hill and contain a sheltered upper garden and lawn. The lower level is a rectangle, following the contours at first then cantilevering out to the view. The point where these two forms separate creates the entry courtyard punctuated by a chimney. The strip like forms are accentuated further by the use of dark corrugated iron cladding and lines of windows and green fibre-cement, which ensures the house is folded into and sits discretely in its setting. The roof of the living level below forms a large deck for the upper level, a generous outside space floating in an amphitheatre of bush. Photography - Parsonson Architects</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Eastbourne House 1999</image:title>
<image:caption>This house is about life in the trees - creating a delicate platform amongst them to view the harbour and enjoy the birds and the sun. It has a natural spirit that is part of this special setting. Procession through the house has a sense of unfolding. From below, the house is a heavy, linear wall that retains the forest behind. Entry through this wall and upwards allows the forest and harbour to be viewed and the house to lighten and unfold. The roof of the main level has been separated from the walls on all four sides to extend the sense of lightness, upwardness and delicacy of connection. This main level becomes a viewing platform with the views seen through either the slender beech trunks or fine members of the building. To achieve this delicacy of form, the structure of the main level is made up of 9 portal frames running along the land contour with joinery and wall panels becoming infills between. <image:title>Home - Zinc House 2014</image:title>
<image:caption>The house is perched on a steep hillside overlooking the harbour and comprises three levels plus garages that connect from the street to the expansive gardens and public park below. Research into fluid dynamics influenced by the harbour catchments led to studies of straight lines flowing into curves and vice versa and these were used to derive the plan and cross sectional forms of the upper levels of the house. The walls of these areas are clad in vertically seamed zinc, which provides a regular rhythm unifying the forms and helping to relate the scale to its context. Existing double storey garages were re-clad and connected to the new house with high-level zinc walls punctuated with openings that extend across a covered outdoor terrace. This space enjoys early morning and late summer sun. The curving zinc walls enclose the house offering privacy from the street. The sculptural form has a weight and austerity but attempts to provide a welcoming invitation upon arrival. The interior itself is open and light filled with generous glazing and decks overlooking the harbour. These harbourside decks are supported on zinc-clad columns that rise out of the bush below and weave past the black stained vertical timber clad forms of the lower levels. <image:caption>This is a small-medium 3-bedroom house sitting along a southward sloping hill, looking east across Tasman Bay. A ‘T’ shaped plan is wrapped around a northwest-facing courtyard allowing views through the house to the sea. The property is a generous size and there is opportunity for the owners to flesh out the gardens, and to further add pergolas and verandas to the east and west sides to soften and shade outdoor spaces. There are 4 distinct elevations to the house defined by the roofing material wrapping down both the north and south elevations. These are without windows to provide privacy from the road, the neighbour to the north, which gives the house a simple sculptural quality. The location of windows focuses views to the sea to the east, and to the mountains and hills to the west. Photographer Paul McCredie</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Northland House 2003</image:title>
<image:caption>The house sits on a high ridgeline overlooking Wellington Harbour with orientation in two directions, east to the harbour and hills beyond and west to the afternoon sun. From the road the house peers austerely over the protective courtyard wall, while the inside spaces feel very open and connected to the outside. We were interested in the idea of floating above a landscape, which represented to us a sense of freedom, lightness and appropriateness to this location. Patterns of surface materials are loosely influenced by the tapestry of land viewed from the sky. Some in shifting layers with non-parallel surfaces subtly distorting perspectives. Flooring and decking change in material and texture as they run level from the west courtyard, through the living room and out to the west deck. The roof glides over, unimpeded, like a shadow, perforated at the edges with louvres. Large solid and glazed doors slide to open or close the spaces. The wings of the plan focus the views either east or west and close off the house to the neighbours to the north and south. <image:title>Home - Korokoro House 2014</image:title>
<image:caption>The house was designed for a family of 6 with children of varying ages. It sits on an elevated site with expansive views over Wellington Harbour to the south and a narrower view down to a green valley at the lower end of the Belmont Regional Park to the north. The owners were attracted to the site because of the different views, outdoor area and connection to green space. Because of its elevation and location, the house is hit by both the southerly and northerly winds. We created an ‘H’ shaped plan containing both south and north facing outside spaces that are sheltered in different winds and sunny at different times of the day, connected through the very glazed central living room. The north facing outdoor area is excavated into the hillside so that when planted it will both filter and deflect the wind over the top of the house. Bedrooms are positioned in a variety of different ways to pick up the different aspects of view, with 2 children’s rooms at the east end of the house located around an activity area as extra living space. There are 2 main wings to the house with a split-level between. To the west, bedrooms sit over the main living areas and to the east, bedrooms and smaller living space sit over the garage. Further to the west across the lawn is a guest house which in the future will become connected to the house with landscaping. Each wing of the house is wrapped in a corrugated colorsteel sheath in the form of a roof that extends down the east and west walls and meets over the link-way joining the 2 wings. The owners have a strong interest in colour. Together with the clients we have explored brighter colours in the living spaces and more subtle natural colours in the bedroom areas. The buildings are constructed economically, clad in weathered cedar and fibre-cement. They sit amongst established planting on this barren and often wild coast. The place is a retreat, humble and simple with a large variety of places to sit inside and outside at different times of the day and night. An outdoor room faces east with views through trees to the sea and a pergola covered terrace sits to the west soon to be covered in Bougainvillea. <image:title>Home - Mitika Apartments 2004</image:title>
<image:caption>The building contains seven large apartments, one per floor and each with 270 sq.m floor area and 50 sq.m of decks. The developer made the inspired decision to fit in one less floor than other neighbouring buildings of the same height. This allowed a generous stud height of 2700mm per floor with 3200mm for the top floor. Decks and living spaces are along the wide frontage, facing north out to the harbour and hills. By tilting the kitchen, main bedroom and ensuite at 45 degrees , these rooms gain views to the sea past the side of the neighbouring building and yielded an unusual zigzag hallway. There is a subtle geological reference in the concrete cladding on the east facade to shifting, folding, interlocking plates. Similarly the balconies relate to the harbour with their horizontality, openness, shape and tongue & groove soffits. The house is laid out to provide varied accommodation, for small numbers or large groups and is laid out in a string like manner. The garage and 2 bedrooms are at the top level leading down to the living space and down further to an activity room and a variety of bedrooms opening out to a lower a lower lawn. There is no front entry and there are several different ways to move around and through the house, both inside and out. There is a walking and quad-bike track that is an extension of the driveway that passes through the central courtyard and under an internal link-way leading to the lower lawn and jetty. An uninsulated 2 storey cabin was altered, insulated, reclad and extended. We were keen not to add to the collection of existing suburban houses here, but to build in the bach spirit, to create a dwelling that was playful, relaxed and dealt with the unique conditions here practically. <image:caption>This site was subdivided from the original property which contained an existing house designed and lived in by the Government Architect John Campbell in the early 1900’s. It is historically listed and we were therefore keen for the new house to be lower and more subservient in its appearance to the original house while at the same time relating to it formally. There were many restrictions on the property. The site was tight and relatively steep, the combined properties could not exceed the 50% inner residential site coverage and the new house was required to fit within all sunlight recession planes. The resultant dwelling fully utilizes its site. Space for the bedrooms and garaging was excavated below, forming a base to the lighter living spaces above. The roof is clad in zinc and is cut and folded cleanly to focus views out to the harbour and diagonally to the trees, while at the same time providing a sense of enclosure and privacy. <image:caption>This small one bedroom house is located at Pekapeka Beach, a small seaside settlement an hours drive north of Wellington City. It rests on gently undulating dune lands, facing northwest, looking across the road and lower dunes out to the Tasman Sea and Kapiti Island to the west. It is intended for the house to both relate to the horizontality of this landscape and also be at odds with it, as if it had been left there, or washed up. The exterior is composed of a rhythm of painted fibre cement panels. Elements of wall, roof beam, roof layers and brise soleil are expressed separately, with light entering in places in between. There is a sense of horizontal and vertical layering, and metaphorically a sense of dislocation or decomposition of parts, as if a creature or construction had been left high and dry above the tide. The building is designed to be part of the rural setting, raised off the ground and sitting beside the original woolshed, which has served the bay since the early 1900's. The bach is rugged yet welcoming and offers unpretentious shelter, it is the type of place where you kick off your shoes and don't need to worry about walking sand through the house. The bach is formed of two slightly off-set pavilions, one housing the bedrooms and the other the main living space. Decks are located at each end of the living pavilion allowing the sun to be followed throughout the day. <image:caption>KOROKORO BUSH HOUSE 2017 The house sits at the end of a narrow road, perched on a steep hillside, looking down a bush-clad valley to the Korokoro Stream with views out to Wellington Harbour through a V in the hills. It is two storied with bedrooms upstairs and living spaces below. A covered walkway steps down beside the garage leading to the front door with diagonal views out to the north facing deck, lawn and hills beyond. From the entry, passage through the house follows the line of the hillside in a procession of gentle steps down to the main living spaces, that look over the valley and wrap around a private north facing deck. The house is designed as a private and peaceful retreat with colouring and materials that comfortably sit amongst the verdant surroundings. In contrast the garage door becomes like a lantern lighting up at night. Photographer Paul McCredie</image:caption>

<image:caption>Is a medium density housing development on a small 564 sq.m Mount Victoria corner site. There are 1 two-level and 7 single-level ‘apartments’ spread over 3 stories, with a clock tower defining the street corner. The complex sits over an in-ground car park The building is arranged around a north facing open area, containing public and private courtyards at ground level. Each apartment connects visually to the street and to this open area. Living and outdoor spaces are private and light filled with varieties of views. The building as a whole is intended to read more as a village than a housing complex, creating a connection with the buildings and community of Mount Victoria. The main construction is kept very simple with light timber framing clad in corrugated iron and plastered concrete panels. We have expressed the indoor-outdoor connections as projections added to the façade, which give comfort and privacy to the inhabitants and allow the building to express itself to the street. <image:title>Home - Sea View House 2012</image:title>
<image:caption>The site sits just below the road facing east, looking across the botanical gardens out to Wellington Harbour. The new house accommodates a large family of different age groups over 3 levels, with parents and younger children’s bedroom upstairs, older children’s bedrooms and a swimming pool on the bottom level and a variety of living spaces in between on the middle level, laid out to capture views and all day sun. Two main gestures set up the structure of the house; outer sections of pitched corrugated iron roofs wrap and frame the house, these fit within the building envelope and create a relationship with the existing houses of the area, while a flat roofed lightly shaped wooden clad element running between the pitched roofs houses the garage, bedrooms and pool. The relationship between these two gestures creates varying geometries and spaces with differing characters, materials and levels of light. <image:title>Home - Wairau Valley House 2010</image:title>
<image:caption>The property is located in the Wairau Valley, 10 minutes from Blenheim and close to the Wairau River as it snakes along the edge of the northern hills, a patterned rural landscape of farms, orchards and vineyards. The house has a strong connection to the land spatially and materially. There is a sense of encampment, where different interlinked pavilions offer different areas of occupation and privacy or openness. The spaces are housed beneath low sloping gable forms where boundaries are blurred between the land and building. Heavy lined concrete walls and structures feel part of the land and are used to define indoor and outdoor spaces. The gable roofs float over these to provide shelter and the comforts of home. The landscape is cultivated; lines of orchard trees and vines mark the land in regular patterns and the house responds with the lines of pergolas and posts ready for planting to integrate the house with the land further still. <image:title>Home - Pekapeka Beach House 2008</image:title>
<image:caption>This holiday home was allowed us to explore creating a building of strong architectural character and economy. We have used simple modular construction techniques combined with a very simple form. The plan is a rectangle and is divided into 3 parts, the solid bedroom forms at each end support a floating roof over the living space in between. This layout allows the living room to face both east to hills and west to the sea. It allows sun into the house throughout the day, for passive solar heating of the concrete slab and creates a sheltered outside space on the east side that still keeps a strong connection to the western sea views. <image:title>Home - Manly Street Beach House 2000</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a beach house for a family of five. It was intended that the house create a story of passage from suburbia to the beach and the horizon beyond. From the street the house appears as a slightly adhoc arrangement of separated forms, with fibre cement sheet boxes anchored to the ground and lighter forms floating around the side, leading to the beach. The living area is a raised pavillion from which to enjoy the hot summers and views of the sea. Metaphors related to the location are threaded through the design. These are present as you pass through or stay in the house, adding a resonance that is not necessarily fully discovered. <image:caption>On approach a rurally influenced corrugated iron wall runs away and turns 90 degrees to contain the arrival space. The main roof glides over this leading into the house. The house sits long and low in this large and multi-layered landscape. The dark corrugated iron walls blend with the dark lines of Macrocarpa shelter planting in the distance. The definition between inside and outside is blurred by the continuity of floors and terraces and the roofs hovering or gliding lightly across the plan. <image:title>Parsonson Architects Studio - Parsonson Architects Studio</image:title>
<image:caption>The original 2 storey building was designed by James Bennie in 1916 and is now historically listed. It has been many things in its time; originally part of a larger picture theatre and more recently a video production suite with restaurant and bakery below. The new work involved conversion of the upstairs into two studios and work to the facade of the building. The original building is brick masonry and was restrengthened in the 1980's with a series of interior steel portals. The original Victorian facade was extremely elaborate and joyous but in the 1930's this was stripped off to a more pared back semi-art deco style. A bull nosed verandah was added in the 1980's to complete somewhat of a historical potpourri. The new facade references James Bennies original design. Our approach for the main studio spaces was to strip back the interiors and add skylighting to allow the buildings natural loftiness to be felt and the resulting spaces to be open and light filled. New elements have been added in a way that allows the existing building elements to be expressed individually. The composition of the circulation spaces hopes to abstractly reference the histories of the building. Pivoting hoop pine plywood shutters filter the light into the West facing studio.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a 130 square metre 3 bedroom house on a subdivided rear section in Hataitai. The ground floor levels are stepped across the site to minimize the amount of excavation and use of retaining walls. The floor levels step with the land to provide varying relationships between spaces. The openly linked living and circulation spaces, high stud heights in the kitchen and living areas and different views through the house allow a feeling of generosity and space. Cost effective materials and standard NZS 3604 construction were used for economy. Strategic use of colour and layering of materials combine to build a visual story. <image:caption>The house was designed so that it could be built in several stages. Stage 1 included the main living space, kitchen, laundry, bathroom and 1 bedroom - enough for the owners to live on site. Stage 2 included a second and more intimate living space opening on to a sheltered courtyard, a study and new main bedroom, bathroom and dressing room. The separate stages are expressed as separate elements linked by a delicate glazed walkway that helps form one side of the courtyard while at the same time allowing views through. <image:caption>The house is not a bach but a home that has the relaxed casualness of seaside living with the solidity, enclosure and practicality of a family home. It is designed to allow good views and connection to the beach while still offering a good deal of protection from the elements. Exterior materials flow from outside to inside expressing separate building forms, revealing layers, linking spaces and the interior and exterior, which creates a sense of encampment. The roof pitch follows the line of the land up and away from downpipes, which are drawn out of the ground. The layout is casual and flexible allowing response to the wind direction and sun. The east courtyard is sunny in the morning and sheltered from the north westerly. On the west side there are places to sit outside when it is calm and inside in the sun when its windy. <image:title>Yeosu Competition - Yeosu EXPO Competition Entry 2009</image:title>
<image:caption>Competition entry for Thematic Pavilion, Expo 2012, Yeosu, Korea. Learning from the natural processes and geometries of South Korea’s ocean coast habitat offers the seed for a new kind of sculptural and ecological architecture. Nature’s organic ocean geometries are the inspiration for the ‘OCEAN FOREST’. The Ocean-Forest concept is based around an architecture of fluid flows between vertical six sided info-tubes, which provide islands of stillness within the flow – and encourage people to slow down, pause and absorb information. Thus each tube acts as an information processor – or information tube. Each info-tube is assembled from a series of 3 meter high modular hexagonal components to form a tower. Each tube, just like a coral polyp is made up of lower, and upper components. All vertical circulation, service ducts, services, water harvesting and re-cycling are housed within the info-tube structures. The top of each tube also forms a natural chimney for hot and cool air circulation and natural lighting down to lowest level, while the canopies catch and harvest water run-off for toilets. All roof canopies are covered with integrated solar panels to power efficient LED digital screens and lighting. In association with Chris Moller Architecture + Urbanism.</image:caption>

<image:title>Greytown House - Greytown House 2008</image:title>
<image:caption>After retiring from life on a farm our clients requested a new house for a lifestyle block on the outskirts of Greytown. The house was conceived as two sheds running parallel to each other and relating directly to the standard building company storage / work sheds. The house sheds are eroded and broken down and appear like spaces created through the ground surface being pushed up. Lines of the landscape carry through these spaces from east to west. These lines are emphasized with the decking extending through to the flooring in the intermediate spaces along with hanging pergolas. The horizontal planes of the Wairarapa are further emphasized with the hanging pergolas and terracing creating strong horizontal lines in the large landscape. A dark Corrugated iron was chosen for wall and roof surfaces to relate to the storage / work sheds and provide a direct reference to typical NZ rural buildings. <image:title>Lowry Bay House - Lowry Bay House 2013</image:title>
<image:caption>The site and nearby houses are surrounded by established vegetation amongst a backdrop of bush covered hills. The owners, who are very social people, asked for a large living space and outdoor deck area where they could host friends, enjoy the sun and views of Wellington harbour and be surrounded by bush and birdsong. Much research was done to find an economical solution that would provide the necessary spaces and layout while at the same time creating a house that has its own individual architectural character tuned to its location. The bedroom level has been excavated back into the hillside with the deck and living spaces sitting above. Both the roof and floor levels fall in the same direction as the slope of the land. The main roof is one mono-pitch and the rear and side walls are clad in vertical corrugated iron for economy and to visually wrap these parts of the house. Varying layers of vertical materials are used on the north façade to create rhythms that relate to the light and shadow of the trees. <image:caption>The property is a subdivided section facing west with views across Miramar and glimpses of the sea and harbour. The house has open living areas upstairs with 3 bedrooms below. It is laid out to exploit the views and sun with a feeling of space and built to a modest budget. The lie of the roof relates to the surrounding bungalows and the house is set into a slight cut in the contour. The east section of the house is high walled, visually anchoring the house into the site. The west section of the house is cut and stepped with the roof lightly gliding over at the same angle as the land contour. Awards: NZIA Local Award 2002, NZIA Colour Award 2002</image:caption>

<image:title>Matai House - Matai House 2013</image:title>
<image:caption>The family had lived in this early 1900’s Villa for several years before embarking on alterations. It was a typical villa layout, rooms running down each side of a central hallway with a view to the laundry, toilet and kitchen areas at the rear. These received the best late sun, but were nestled up against a retaining wall holding up the bank rising up to the rear of the site. The house felt disconnected from the rear of the property and the owners needed extra living space and two more bedrooms for their growing family. Together with the clients we decided to divide the house in two, the old villa and the new extension. To accentuate this difference and to connect the house with the sunny rear part of the section we created a series of concrete platforms with wooden steps between creating a new elevated family living space leading up to a larger sunnier rear courtyard. We placed the two new bedrooms and a bathroom above the new living space. The roofs and outer walls of the extension are created in the same corrugated colorsteel as the old house, but are folded to suit the functions they enclose and dodge the WCC building envelope. The new living space is located directly at the end of the villa hallway. The space is visible from the front door with the steps and a raised clerestory roof lifting the eye up to the rear of the property and giving a sense of invitation. Glazing of the clerestory is behind timber slat work to filter the late low sun. Photography - Paul McCredie</image:caption>

<image:caption>Icebreaker is a young and innovative Wellington clothing manufacturing company who sell their products worldwide. The Wellington Airport ‘touch-lab' is their first foray into retail. A design was developed around the idea of a sewn shop, using organic forms that could be cut, curved and stitched. Shagpile carpet forms were used, which are soft, sculptural and engaging, while the remainder of the shop is treated in a crisper more rectilinear way, where lines and layers of shelving, natural images, product images and product have been built up. Entering Wellington Airport, the shop welcomes visitors with the large open end of its cross section. Moving through the shop the curving shagpile forms start to compress and envelop the shopper in a more intimate way. Light spills out between the gaps from the lighter interior into the darker arrival corridor accentuating the varying forms and inviting exploration. <image:caption>This is a house for a couple who commute to Wellington to work, a house that is casual, sunny, open and light and related to the subtleties of the site. The street boundary faces northeast and in the middle of the site is a small hillock. We have run the house through level across this allowing it to float above the ground at the front and rear. At the centre of the house, where it touches the ground, a courtyard is indented to bring in sun and light and provide a private outside living. The kitchen is at the centre of the living spaces, which flow in three directions from this point. Photography - Paul McCredie Awards: NZIA Local Award 2004</image:caption>

<image:title>Waikanae House - Waikanae House 2004</image:title>

<image:caption>This small project involved extending and renovating a small pre-1900’s workingman’s cottage. The finished house is laid out in 3 slightly stepped levels, down to the east. The top level (the original cottage) contains the living room and a bedroom, the middle the kitchen and the lower a dining family area opening out to a deck with views through trees to the east. The owner had grown up in a 1950’s modernist house and parts of the interior are infused with a similar type of detailing, which is put together in a way to compliment and subtly contrast the style of the original cottage.
